Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility
If the Smithsonian is the nation’s attic, Garber AKA Silver Hill was the storage space above the garage that was crammed full of all kinds of aviation goodness. Every tour was an adventure. Different buildings would be included from time to time and different aircraft would be revealed as artifacts were moved around.
Not every artifact was moved to Udvar-Hazy (companion center to National Air & Space Museum). Some items were dispersed to museums across the country for restoration and display.
“Previously it acted as a storage facility for items which could not be put on public display, but with the completion of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, and restoration at its own, on-site Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar facility, all items in storage are being moved out of the Garber Facility. With the opening of Udvar-Hazy, the Garber facility was closed to public tours.”

This museum has moved to a new facility which appears to be a major upgrade since these photos were taken. The new building was featured near the end of the film The Spy Who Dumped Me.

Attended this airshow to see the F-117 on static display. Security was tight and people were packed around to see it. Fortunately a thunder storm moved in and the crowd was advised to take cover in the hangars. When we were given the all clear I sprinted to get these photos before the crowds returned. The build-up for the Gulf War would begin in a few months and the F-117 would play an important role.
